ADOPT-A-CANAL
The Adopt-A-Canal is now in it's 20th year, this program was the insparitation of Louis Thiel, a board Supervisor on the West Side SWCD Board who is also on the board of the New Sweden Irrigation District. The project started with 10 teams cleaning the canals of Idaho Falls and surrounding areas both to the east and west of the city center, these teams consist of volenteers from church groups, boy scouts and girl scout troops, business and private family groups, each has adopted a 1 mile stretch of canal, where they walk the entire length picking up all types of garbage, including old carpet, tires, bikes, lawn clippings, construction garbage etc, the collected trash is taken to the local land fill and disposed off, the clean up starts about the 3rd weekend of march and continues until the 18th of April, sometimes dates change due to weather or early release of water in to the canals. Today there are 35 teams with over 200 volenteers. If you are interested in adopting a section of canal and want to be a part of a great cleanup project please call Joyce Smith at 208-522-6250 ext 101 and sign up.
